Seany Releases New Ewing’s Sarcoma PSA

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and The Seany Foundation is striving to bring some very much needed attention to some little known diseases.  As research money comes trickling down the cancer heirarchy, these rarer pediatric cancers are often overlooked.  This gives us all the more reason to make some noise about them.  Find out a little bit more about Ewing’s sarcoma, the type of bone cancer that Sean battled for nearly 7 years:

This article is from Science Magazine and charts the lower survival rates of teens diagnosed with cancer.  It also talks about Ewing’s sarcoma, the rare cancer that Sean was battling.

Seany Fellowship Recipients Announced

Congratulations to the 2010 Sean Lewis Robins Fellowship in Pediatric Oncology Recipients: Dr. Lisa Hartman and Dr. Courtney Lyle.

Dr. Lisa Hartman is our first year fellow.  She began her research in July 2009.  She completed undergraduate studies at Pomona College, attended medical school at the University of Texas at Galveston, and served her pediatric residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/ Montefiore Children’s Hospital.  Having yet to choose her specific research for years two and three, Dr. Hartman expresses interest in solid tumors.

Dr. Courtney Lyle is our second year fellow.  She began her research in January 2009.  She graduated from the University of Rochester, attended medical school at Emory University, and completed her pediatric residency at University of Colorado Children’s Hospital.  Dr. Lyle is interested in studying risk factors for pediatric stroke.

The Seany Foundation is dedicated to funding research to help find cures for pediatric cancers and to improving the quality of life for children and teen battling cancer.  Congratulations to our new Fellows!

Seany Celebrates over $90k Raised!

The San Diego Hall of Champions was abuzz with guests enjoying gourmet food by Jeffrey Strauss, live music by Kamau Kenyatta, and the fast-talking auctioning of Bill Menish.  Winning bidders walked away from the silent auction with amazing items such as travel packages to Las Vegas, an electric guitar kit, and autographed footballs.  The live auction featured a behind-the-scenes tour at the San Diego Zoo and a private dinner at Pamplemousse Grille.  Assemblywoman Lori Saldana and pro-skater Willy Santos even joined us for the fun.

After a touching video about the Foundation and its inspiration, guests demonstrated their commitment to improving the quality of life for local kids by raising their paddles to donate to help fund the Seany Teen Activity Room and Seany Rehab Swimming Pool.  Yes, a healthy portion of philanthropy does make dessert taste sweeter. Of course, the raffle prizes, caricatures, and photo booth all helped as well.

Thank you to all of our guests, donors, sponsors, and volunteers who helped make this event possible!

On Sunday, October 11, from 5pm to 8pm, The Seany Foundation and over 120 friends partied in style and raised over $90,000 to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer!

Seany Foundation Raises over $90,000!

Thanks to the generosity of the Everything Is Possible Celebration ’09 sponsors and guests, The Seany Foundation was able to raise over $90,000 to benefit its local projects to help find cures for pediatric cancers and to improve the quality of life for kids currently battling cancer.

The evening began with an open bar and about 40 silent auction items open for bids.  Guests then enjoyed the delicious cuisine catered personally by chef extraordinaire, Jeffrey Strauss (of Pamplemousse Grille).  A photo booth, caricatures, and raffle prizes kept guests entertained while Kamau Kenyatta rose spirits with his jazz tunes.  Bill Menish had his share of fun with the crowd during the live auction and also welcomed special guests Willy Santos and family and Assemblymember Lori Saldana to the party.

After a touching video about the Foundation and its mission, hearts throughout the room were warmed by guests “raising the paddle” to donate to help fund not only pediatric cancer research but also patient projects such as the teen activity center and rehab swimming pool.  And thus, Seany’s legacy continues.

Mitch Robins, Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, Amy Robins, and Barry Abrams enjoy the evening.

We’re well on our way to hitting that half-a-million-dollar milestone.  Not bad for only a couple years!  And we’re just getting started!  Look out childhood cancer!  Your days are numbered.

Thank you to those who made this event possible: Daniel Baird Photography, Chris Daily, all of our wonderful volunteer staff, the Mission Bay High Key Club, our generous sponsors and item donors (check out the list on the News and Events page), Diane Kern, Bill Menish, the San Diego Hall of Champions staff, Willy Santos and family, Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, North Shore Printery, Scribbles Ink, Rene Van Rem, Blue Photo Booth, Kamau Kenyatta, Jeffrey Strauss, all of the lovely people in attendance, and, of course, our Seany Foundation supporters who couldn’t attend but still donated.  You can all feel very good about doing good.

Plans for next year’s Celebration are already in the works.  The date has been set for October 10, 2010.  That’s right: 10/10/10.  So, mark your calendars because it’s sure to be one party you won’t want to miss!

Just got the great news in from pro-skater and local celeb Willy Santos that he’ll be donating a ” skate and lunch with Willy” experience for our live auction!  Not only that- he’ll also be attending Celebration 09 on October 11 with his lovely wife.  What a good guy.  Nice to know there are folks like him still out there.  If you don’t know him already, check out his sites: Willy Santos and Willy’s Workshop.
