Thanks to Temple Solel Early Childhood Center

A very special thanks goes out Noah Baird and The Kadima Bet class of 2011 from Temple Solel Early Childhood Center. They spent some time thinking about what they wanted to do with the Tzedakah they earned this year.

After several suggestions, they agreed that giving their class Tzedakah to The Seany Foundation would make everyone happy and proud. In addition, Kadima Alef and Kadima Bet joined Noah and his Mom, Becky, to host a lemonade stand to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Thank you to Becky Cherlin Baird, Sharon Segal, and the teachers and kids of Temple Solel’s ECC Kadima, Class of 2011, for making a difference! You’re off to a bright start!

Seany Golf Raises Over $55K

On Monday, May 23, The Seany Foundation hosted the 1st Annual Swinging for Seany Golf Tournament. The partly cloudy weather did not deter our supporters from teeing off against childhood cancer in a big way! The event raised over $55,000, which will be put toward ongoing programs and research to improve the quality of life for kids and teens battling cancer.

Professional Golfer Maiya Tanaka swang her best in our Par 3 Challenge against 23 teams. “Winners” received raffle tickets, and “losers” got to use her shot in their game. Pro Skateboarder Willy Santos practiced his form out on the green alongside SD Chargers Steve Gregory and Vincent Jackson. Congrats to Vincent Jackson for placing 2nd in the Longest Drive contest. Special thanks go to Steve Gregory for auctioning off a personalized autographed football at dinner. Boxer Richard Power and NFL Player Rick Mirer also attended to show their support.

Understanding AYA

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term AYA, it stands for “Adolescent and Young Adult”.  Because this age range falls neatly under neither “Children” nor “Adult”, this group is often overlooked.  The Seany Room at RCHSD was designed especially with AYA in mind.

Now, here is an interesting fact from our friends at i2y: Some 72,000 Americans aged 15 to 39 are diagnosed with cancer every year, and more than 10,000 die. They make up less than 10% of all cancer patients, but survival rates for teens and young adults have barely budged since 1975, while those for children and older people have made dramatic gains.

This excerpt was published in the Wall Street Journal. Read the full article to better understand why The Seany Foundation holds our AYA patients so near and dear to our hearts.

Hairless Potter Night Raises $14K

Hairless Potter Night cast its spell last night and raised over $14,000.  The 7pm and 7:30pm special early screenings of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One welcomed over 300 guests to the UltraStar Del Mar Highlands.  Thanks to the generosity of its donors, The Seany Foundation distributed 140 complimentary tickets to young cancer patients and their families from Rady Children’s Hospital, Kaiser Hospital, and Ronald McDonald House.

Fans began lining up at 5:30pm and feasted on popcorn, soda, candy, and sliders as they eagerly awaited the screening.  Favorite dressed up characters included Professor McGonagall, numerous Harry Potters, representatives from Ravenclaw and Slytherin, Malfoy, Tonks, and a whole magical family.  Costume contest winners went home happy with a Dream Dinner, Harry Potter Clue, 20 Questions Quidditch-style, and a brand-new Kindle.  Opportunity drawing winners took home two VIP tickets to the next Seany Movie Night.

Special thanks to Jess Ochoa and his team at UltraStar for helping us host this exciting event!  And once again, thank you to our kind-hearted donors for coming out to support our cause.  Photos will be posted soon!

Celebration 2010 Raises Over $80K

Guests enter the main hall for dinner

On Sunday, October 10, over 150 guests attended the 3rd Annual Everything Is Possible Celebration held at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.  The jovial evening began with a cocktail reception and silent auction upstairs, where most of the action centered around a coveted Opera Gallery print.  Following the welcome reception, guests entered the main hall and enjoyed music by Ruby Summer, gourmet comfort food by Jeffrey Strauss and Pamplemousse Grille, and the warm, fuzzy feeling you get from knowing that all monies donated go directly to help kids who are battling cancer.

The evening was a celebration of Sean’s life and of his legacy.  The Seany Foundation awarded Mr. Bill Siegel with the Seany Community Service Award for his outstanding dedication to the cause.  Dr. William Roberts also attended and spoke about The Seany Foundation’s current research projects.  Celebration 2010 successfully raised over $80,000 thanks to the generosity of its sponsors, its guests, and those unable to attend, who sent in donations.
