Understanding Cancer in AYA

AYA = Adolescents and Young Adults

One of the reasons cancers in adolescents and young adults is so difficult to treat is because it’s just that: cancer in adolescents and young adults. The amazing transition from childhood to adulthood poses great challenges for cancer treatments in this particular stage of life. According to Dr. Brian Hayes-Lattin, “More than 72,000 adolescents and young adults (ages 15 to 39) learn they have cancer each year in the United States, a number up to seven times larger than the number diagnosed under the age of 15.” For more on why The Seany Foundation is concerned about improving treatments for teens and young adults, read the full NCI Cancer Bulletin article.

Hairless Potter Raises Over $14K

Thank you, Seany supporters! Your magic helped us raise over $14,000 at this year’s Hairless Potter Night.

Over 300 people attended Seany Movie Night at UltraStar Poway. Guests followed the red carpet to Theater 10, where they were among the first in San Diego to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. KUSI and Fox News were there to cover all the excitement.

Seany’s Sponsor-a-Kid Program provided 100 complimentary tickets to young cancer patients and their families from local hospitals.

The costume contest boasted young participants dressed as the Weasley brothers, Tonks, Muggles, Dementors, creative versions of Harry Potter, and many more. Winners took home prizes ranging from an iPod to Harry Potter Legos to official HP7 posters to free smoothies at Jamba Juice.

The winner of the evening’s drawing was announced online after the event: #661895. The winner can claim the prize by calling 858-551-5885 or emailing [email protected]

The next Seany Movie Night is scheduled for November 17. For more photos from the event, check out Seany’s Flickr Photostream.

Celebration 2010 Raises Over $80K

Guests enter the main hall for dinner

On Sunday, October 10, over 150 guests attended the 3rd Annual Everything Is Possible Celebration held at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.  The jovial evening began with a cocktail reception and silent auction upstairs, where most of the action centered around a coveted Opera Gallery print.  Following the welcome reception, guests entered the main hall and enjoyed music by Ruby Summer, gourmet comfort food by Jeffrey Strauss and Pamplemousse Grille, and the warm, fuzzy feeling you get from knowing that all monies donated go directly to help kids who are battling cancer.

The evening was a celebration of Sean’s life and of his legacy.  The Seany Foundation awarded Mr. Bill Siegel with the Seany Community Service Award for his outstanding dedication to the cause.  Dr. William Roberts also attended and spoke about The Seany Foundation’s current research projects.  Celebration 2010 successfully raised over $80,000 thanks to the generosity of its sponsors, its guests, and those unable to attend, who sent in donations.
