GreatNonprofits Names Seany “Honorable Mention”

Well, our 43 wonderful reviews for the Cancer Fighter Award 2009 paid off.  The Seany Foundation received “Honorable Mention” from the charity directory GreatNonprofits alongside other greats such as The American Cancer Society and Cancer Schmancer Foundation.  We’re making a name for ourselves!  Thanks for your support!

Sarcoma Awareness Week Wrap-Up

According to our friends at Team Sarcoma, with a dozen teams left to report the results of their events, the preliminary count of the number of participants in the Team Sarcoma Initiative’s International Sarcoma Awareness Week is over 14,000 people! There were over 85 events in 14 countries and 28 states in the United States. One of these events was The Seany Lew Charity Poker Tournament, which was met with great success at the Hotel Solamar here in downtown San Diego. The following press release describes some of what took place at the reception for another awareness event that was held in Washington, DC:

Ambassadors from Lithuania, Mexico, and New Zealand gathered with physicians and government representatives on July 24 in Washington, DC, to honor people dealing with sarcoma, a rare and dangerous cancer. The reception was a part of the global Team Sarcoma Initiative (TSI), a growing movement that involved more than 14,000 people in 14 countries last week.”

Racing Fever Hits Hard!

Racing fever has taken over here in San Diego and The Seany Foundation is learning the ropes at the race track.  Members of Team Seany met today with Dyan Abrams to watch Flashover pull ahead in the final stretch to take first place!

After race 3, we headed to the barn to pay a visit to one of our favorite horses: Seany’s Story.  He is young, healthy, and beautiful.  While enjoying all of the attention, he repeatedly attempted to stick his nose down Tara’s blouse!  Yes, we can all agree that Sean would be proud.  Come see Seany’s Story race in a couple more weeks at the Del Mar Racetrack!

Seany Records Is Born

Seany Records, doing good through good music

Seany Records, doing good through good music

So, if you haven’t heard the story behind Seany Records yet, well, here is an abbreviated version:  When Sean was still in high school, Sean went up to LA with his girlfriend (who was a pop singer at the time) to meet with EMI music exec Harlan Lansky.  They hit it off.  Impressed with Sean’s knowledge of and enthusiasm for music, Harlan offered Sean a summer internship.  Unfortunately, Sean relapsed and was never well enough to make the extended trip up to LA.  After his passing, Harlan called Mitch to explain that he wanted to start a record label in Sean’s honor and have it benefit The Seany Foundation.  And thus, Seany Records was born.  Seany Records’ current artist Or, the Whale is now touring across the country.

Be sure to check them out on MySpace when you get a chance!  A portion of profits from Seany Records is donated directly to The Seany Foundation.

Opening Day at the Races

Team Seany is dressing up for opening day at the races today at the Del Mar Racetrack.  We’re trying to learn the ropes of horse racing now that The Seany Foundation has some horses of its own that will soon be running. We’ll also be sure to see one of our directors and top-givers, Jeffrey Strauss (a big race aficionado), at the track.

At last year’s Celebration gala at Moores UCSD Cancer Center, Dyan and Barry Abrams announced a surprise donation to The Seany Foundation.  Mr. Abrams originally met Mitch Robins at the cementery on one of the many afternoons that Mitch spends visiting a small, personal garden alongside the stone etched with Sean’s name.  After having visited the website and having been touched by Sean’s story and Sean’s own words on his CarePages, Mr. Abrams decided to make a contribution that would continue to give back over the years.

The Abrams bought two new thoroughbred horses, named them “Seany’s Story” and “Seany’s Courage”, and promised 25% of all winnings to The Seany Foundation.  Their generosity moved the crowd and was certainly a wonderful and welcome surprise for the Foundation.

Thank you, Dyan and Barry! We hope you enjoy this racing season!  We’ll look forward to seeing you at the track.

After a win-or-bust two first rounds and a nail-biting semi, the final table competitors kept everyone on the edge of their seats.  The final five poker players received a complimentary Seany Foundation t-shirt and one of five fabulous prizes, including luxury hotels stays and gourmet restaurant gift certificates.  Our first place winner even donated $250 back to The Foundation- talk about good sportsmanship!

The real party animals stayed for the raffle at the end of the night.  We gave away bottle service for up to 10 at Stingaree, tickets for the Padres, tickets for the Turf Club at the Del Mar Racetrack, travel packages, and a digital camera to name a few.

Yes, it seemed that everyone truly enjoyed the evening.  The casino games definitely entertained, too.  We’re looking forward to doing it again.  Thanks to all who came!  We hope to see you again soon for some more fun and games.

On the eve of the global premiere, over 240 Potter fans gathered at the Ultra Star Del Mar Highlands 8 to be one of the first in San Diego to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  The Seany Foundation event raised over $8000.  Guests enjoyed complimentary concessions, and some lucky contestants walked away with some stellar prizes from our costume contest.

The three finalists for Best Overall Costume took home a Wii, an ipod, and Harry Potter Scene It!  The Hogwarts judges also awarded Most Creative, Most Spirited, Most Thrifty, and Most Authentic.

Check out the valiant fight against childhood cancer in these awesome photos!  (Compliments of Seany Foundation volunteer Robert Ricasa.)  Oh, and if you haven’t seen the footage yet, check out how The Seany Foundation is raising awareness for pediatric cancer here in San Diego.
