Erin Reed Joins the Fight

The Seany Foundation like to share this heartfelt story in Erin’s own words:

“Five years ago my mom died of cancer. A brutally random, generally pediatric form of bone cancer called Ewings sarcoma. My stomach still turns after saying those two ugly words. Over the past five years I have experienced every imaginable emotion. I have been left lonely from the loss of my best friend; devastated over the loss that my children are experiencing, yet are unaware of (I was seven weeks pregnant with my first son when she passed) and pissed off that I now have to cook Christmas dinner. I exchanged most of my wedding gifts for shoes. I was never planning on knowing how to cook a roast, or explain to my children ‘why they can’t see god.’ These were going to be her jobs, not mine. Now, I am a mom of two, and I have shelves of stilettos covered in dust, and I just made Halloween cookies that tasted like chicken because I own only one baking sheet. Life was supposed to be different. Aside from sadness, anger and loneliness, my latest emotion is shame. I am so deeply ashamed that I have hidden behind this veil of sadness and have not done one thing to honor my mom’s memory. It has been so difficult to see her picture, or even speak her name, but she deserves better than that, because she was awesome. The type of mom that all of the other kids wished their mom could be just a little bit more like. The type of mom that I will never be, but cling to the hope that I just might because I have a little of her DNA. One thing is for sure – she never served me chicken-flavored halloween cookies. So why am I so publicly sharing this? Because I’m learning that childhood cancer is the number one killler of children. It kills more than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and pediatric AIDS COMBINED, yet the National Cancer Institute spends less than 3% of it’s $4.6 billion budget on pediatric cancer and the National Cancer Society spends less than 70 cents per $100. It’s unacceptable. I have already lost one love to pediatric cancer. I cannot loose my two naughty, dirty boys who break windows, run with scissors and refuse to eat their vegetables. That will take me out. Sadly, I know that the boogie man is real. He’s already visited me and I’m terrified that he will return. So here’s my start to honor my mom and join in the fight against pediatric cancer:

I have a tiny online jewelry site called Gypsy Sol Designs (www.etsy.com/shop/gypsysoldesigns) I will be donating 25% of my profits in November and December to The Seany Foundation (www.theseanyfoundation.org). They work really hard to support cancer research and do cool things for kids with Ewings Sarcoma and other forms of pediatric cancer. So, if you’ll be holiday shopping, think of me. Thanks for letting me share my story. I can’t wait to cut the Seany Foundation a fat check in the name of the friends of Valerie Farris, because there were many. Xo.”

Thank you, Erin. And welcome to Team Seany!

Art from the Heart Helps Heal

On September 20, over 40 works of art created by young cancer patients and their siblings brightened the halls of the Acute Care Pavilion at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego as part of the 2011 Art from the Heart Exhibit, sponsored by The Seany Foundation.

Merit Award and Judges' Choice Recipients

Artists, ranging in ages from 1-20, wowed the crowd and judges with their creativity and talent. A public event that began in 2005, the Art from the Heart Exhibit gives patients being treated on the Hematology/Oncology unit at Rady Children’s Hospital and their siblings an opportunity to express themselves through art for both fun and recognition. As such, each participant walked away with a ribbon for their unique contribution. Ribbon categories included Judges’ Choice, Merit Award, or Honorable Mention. Many of the proud artists’ family and friends were also in attendance to show support for their loved ones.

The exhibition was followed by a celebratory reception that included refreshments and snacks and a saxophonist who helped set the mood for the evening’s festivities.

The Seany Foundation proudly salutes the talented young artists of Rady Children’s Hospital and thanks Dr. Deborah Schiff for organizing this wonderful event. The Seany Foundation would also like to thank its donors for making this and other programs that make a real difference in the lives of kids battling cancer possible.

Celebration 2011 Raises Over $80K for Childhood Cancer

On Saturday, September 17, over 100 guests attended The Seany Foundation’s 4th Annual Everything Is Possible Celebration at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in LaJolla, CA. Guests enjoyed cocktails, gourmet cuisine, live entertainment, live/silent auctions, and an opportunity drawing, all while helping raise over $80,000 for pediatric cancer research and patient-care projects!

Guests were also treated to the unique and spectacular lighting of BlissLights, who graciously donated their time and professional lighting to illuminate the entranceway that guests passed through on their way to the Tide Pool Terrace, where they enjoyed cocktails and a front row view of the stunning orange and purple sunset against the gorgeous and vast Pacific Ocean.

Once the sun went down, sister pop duo Ruby Summer gave a spirited live performance, and guests browsed enticing silent auction items, which ranged from a magnum of fine wine to an autographed guitar from the famous rock band Heart.

At the end of the silent auction, guests headed inside to their tables, which were festively named after exotic fish and decorated with bright blue and green tablecloths and soft, flickering candlelight. Shortly thereafter, plates adorned with the gourmet creations of Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille were placed in front of each guest to experience.

Next, The Seany Foundation Co-founders Mitch and Amy Robins took to the stage to officially welcome guests for their attendance and support. Afterward, hip-hop artist Urbalist gave a powerful performance, highlighting the struggles of teens and young adults battling cancer. The rapper and cancer survivor also took the opportunity to shine the spotlight on this year’s Seany Community Service award recipient Ben C. Weinrib and his charitable works.

2011 Seany Community Service Award Receipient: Ben C. Weinrib

Following his acceptance speech, Ben drew the winning ticket in the Champagne Promotion – the winner was to take home a 32″ LCD TV. In true Seany spirit, the lucky winner donated the TV he had just won to a young cancer patient in attendance.

Auctioneer Steve Hamann then began what turned out to be a very exciting live auction! As quickly as Steve could get out the words, guests were raising their bid numbers to snatch up exotic travel packages, a Chargers package that included lunch or dinner with Safety Steve Gregory, and an exclusive golf package. Supporters continued to show their unbridled support during Raise the Paddle, generously donating over $7,000 to support The Seany Foundation’s current research and patient programs.

Finally, dessert and coffee were served and the Co-founders wrapped up the evening by announcing the opportunity drawing winners. The lucky winner of the coveted iPad2 happened to be a young guest who was celebrating the 14th anniversary of her adoption!

There is no doubt that this year’s “Everything Is Possible” Celebration was a success and that folks showed their true colors and desire to make a difference in the lives of kids and teens with cancer. For this, we are endlessly thankful. Along with guests, The Seany Foundation would like to thank its Gold Level Sponsors: Barona Resort & Casino, Eddy Pump, Medical Center Pharmacy, and Kleinfelder, as well as its many in-kind donors.

Thank you all for helping make cures possible for children with cancer. Simply put, none of this would be possible without you!
