September: National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

This month is as good as any to learn more about how you can help in the battle against pediatric cancer!  Here are a few tidbits of information taken from our fact page about childhood cancers:

Cancer kills more kids than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and muscular dystrophy COMBINED.

The incidence of childhood cancer increased 33% between 1975 and 2001.

Sarcomas are cancers of connective tissue (bone, muscle, fat, cartilage, some soft tissue).

There are over 50 types of pediatric sarcomas; they account for 20% of all pediatric cancers.

99% of all sarcomas occur in children.

To help make a difference in the lives of childhood battling cancer, please help us to spread the word.  Ask your friends, family, and co-workers to read our blog, subscribe to our newsletter, watch our videos, follow our tweets, attend our events, and/or donate online.  Do good; feel good.  Help us raise awareness this month and join us to celebrate your hard work on Sunday, October 11.

Sarcoma Awareness Week Wrap-Up

According to our friends at Team Sarcoma, with a dozen teams left to report the results of their events, the preliminary count of the number of participants in the Team Sarcoma Initiative’s International Sarcoma Awareness Week is over 14,000 people! There were over 85 events in 14 countries and 28 states in the United States. One of these events was The Seany Lew Charity Poker Tournament, which was met with great success at the Hotel Solamar here in downtown San Diego. The following press release describes some of what took place at the reception for another awareness event that was held in Washington, DC:

Ambassadors from Lithuania, Mexico, and New Zealand gathered with physicians and government representatives on July 24 in Washington, DC, to honor people dealing with sarcoma, a rare and dangerous cancer. The reception was a part of the global Team Sarcoma Initiative (TSI), a growing movement that involved more than 14,000 people in 14 countries last week.”

Well, The Seany Foundation was pleasantly surprised to see over 100 new bright and happy faces walk through the doors of the Solstice Ballroom at Hotel Solamar on Saturday night for the First Annual Seany Lew Charity Poker Tournament, which raised over $6000.

Thanks to our volunteer photographer, Terrani Nevarez, we have plenty of photos to boast of the evening’s exciting festivities.  Check out the Seany Foundation’s Seany Lew Charity Poker Tournament Poker photos on Flickr.  You might be in there!

After a win-or-bust two first rounds and a nail-biting semi, the final table competitors kept everyone on the edge of their seats.  The final five poker players received a complimentary Seany Foundation t-shirt and one of five fabulous prizes, including luxury hotels stays and gourmet restaurant gift certificates.  Our first place winner even donated $250 back to The Foundation- talk about good sportsmanship!

The real party animals stayed for the raffle at the end of the night.  We gave away bottle service for up to 10 at Stingaree, tickets for the Padres, tickets for the Turf Club at the Del Mar Racetrack, travel packages, and a digital camera to name a few.

Yes, it seemed that everyone truly enjoyed the evening.  The casino games definitely entertained, too.  We’re looking forward to doing it again.  Thanks to all who came!  We hope to see you again soon for some more fun and games.

An International Sarcoma Awareness Week Event

We have been talking with Team Sarcoma and working with them to help promote International Sarcoma Awareness Week, this July 18-26.  Our official event is going to be the Seany Lew Charity Poker Tournament.  More than 10,000 people around the world will be participating in various events during this special week dedicated to educating the public about sarcomas and what they can do to help find a cure.  Sean was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, which is a bone cancer.  On their website, Team Sarcoma defines sarcoma as “a cancer of the connective tissues, such as nerves, muscles, cartilage, joints, bone, or blood vessels”.  If you have visited The Seany Foundation website lately, you’ll read that “99% of all sarcomas occur in children.”  In recognition of International Sarcoma Awareness Week, we’ll be displaying more information about sarcomas at our poker tournament on July 18 as well as sporting the official “Sarcoma knows no borders” bracelets.  Show your support by signing up online for our event at www.theseanyfoundation.org/poker
