1
in 330 children will be diagnosed with cancer before
the age of 20. (More than
12,000 children in the United States per year)
Cancer
kills more kids than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes,
and muscular dystrophy COMBINED.
The
incidence of childhood cancer increased 33% between
1975
and
2001.
Childhood
cancers have no known causes; they are random.
Sarcomas
Sarcomas
are cancers
of connective tissue.
(bone, muscle, fat, cartilage,
some soft tissue)
There
are over 50 types of pediatric sarcoma, they account
for 20%
of all pediatric cancers.
99%
of all sarcomas occur in children.
Each
sarcoma, individually, is so rare that it is listed
as an
"orphan disease".
Ewing's
sarcoma (Cancer of the bone)
Most
often diagnosed between 10 and 20 years old; about
200-250 adolescents are diagnosed each year.
More
commonly strikes boys than girls.
A
tumor can arise in or around any bone in the body with
few
symptoms to warn the child that there's a problem.
Under
the best circumstances (size, location, disease progression),
chances for a 5-year survival rate are slightly
better than 60%.
The
cancer
often spreads (metastasizes) from bones to other organs
such as the lungs; metastasis is present in about 33%
of children
and teens at diagnosis. (Metastasis at diagnosis drops
chances of
5-year survival rates to about 20%.)
